Emergency Plumber in Lethbridge, AB

A burst pipe or a basement full of water calls for quick, calm steps. Here's what to do in the first few minutes, before the plumber arrives.

Request a plumber

Find the main valve

In most Lethbridge homes with a basement, the main shut-off is on the wall where the water line comes in, usually on the street side near the meter. Turn a round handle clockwise until it stops, or swing a lever across the pipe. Then open a tap in the basement to drain the lines.

Keep away from wiring

If water has reached outlets, the furnace or the electrical panel, don't walk through it. Only switch off breakers if you can stand somewhere dry; otherwise contact the power utility. The plumber will want the space safe before they start.

Sewer water in the basement

Water coming up through a floor drain usually points to a blocked sewer line or a city main that's overloaded. Stop using all fixtures in the house. A backwater valve can stop this happening again.

Hot water tank leaks

A tank leaking from its base or seams has usually failed. Close the cold-water valve on top, turn the gas control to off or switch off the breaker, and put towels or a pan underneath until the tank is replaced.

Record the damage

Take photos of the water and anything it has reached before you clean up, and contact your insurer early. Keep receipts for fans, dehumidifiers or anything else you buy.

Send the details

Tell the plumber where the water is coming from, whether the main is off and what it has reached. Send a request and a plumber will get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

Do Lethbridge plumbers take emergency calls at night?
Many do. The plumber who contacts you will confirm when they can arrive and any after-hours rate before setting off.
Should I turn off the hot water tank too?
If the water will be off for a while, yes. Set the gas control to pilot or off, or switch off the breaker, so the tank doesn't heat while it may be low.
