Southern Alberta's hub
Lethbridge passed 100,000 people in 2023, the fourth city in Alberta to do so, and serves as the commercial centre of southern Alberta. The Oldman River splits it into north, south and west sides. The Westside, home to the University of Lethbridge, saw its first housing in 1974, while the older north and south sides hold most of the city's earlier homes and their older pipes.
Chinooks, wind and dry air
Lethbridge is one of the driest cities in Canada, with about 380 mm of precipitation a year, and it ranks second in the country for windy days. Frequent winter chinooks bring warm spells that can be followed by a hard freeze, so pipes in garages, crawl spaces and outside walls go through more freeze-thaw cycles than in many prairie cities. Installing one usually needs a plumbing permit and inspection. The plumber can arrange it.
