Diamond City takes its name from the coal found near the original townsite, a resource also called "black diamond". Farmers, ranchers and miners settled the area at the turn of the twentieth century, and the community grew quickly once a coal mine opened in 1905. It was once an incorporated town but dissolved on June 30, 1937, and is now a hamlet within the county.
