Hiring a Plumber in Alberta

A few questions before the work starts help make sure the job is done properly, permitted and inspected.

Request a plumber

Certification

Plumbing and gasfitting are certified trades in Alberta. Ask the plumber about their trade certificate and, for gas work, their gasfitter qualification.

Permits

Under Alberta's Safety Codes Act, many plumbing and gas jobs need a permit through the municipality, followed by an inspection. Ask who will pull the permit and when the inspection happens.

Written quotes

For larger jobs, ask for a written quote listing the work, materials, permit and clean-up. Compare quotes by what's included, not only the total.

Insurance

Ask whether the business carries liability insurance, and whether it's registered for workers' compensation in Alberta.

Questions to ask

How long will the water be off? Is there a warranty on parts and labour? Who do I contact if something goes wrong afterwards?

When you know what you need, send a request. See our services.

Red flags

Be wary of anyone who wants full payment before starting, won't give a business name you can check, or suggests skipping the permit to save money. Keep the invoice, permit and any warranty papers with your home records once the job is done.

Gas work is different

Any work on gas piping or gas appliances, such as a new range line or a gas hot water tank, needs a qualified gasfitter and usually a gas permit. Never let anyone skip that step; gas leaks are a serious safety risk.

After the job

Ask for the permit number and keep the inspection record. If you sell the house later, buyers and their inspectors often ask for proof that plumbing and gas work was permitted and passed inspection.
